The Qanoun is considered one of the most complex instruments in terms of manufacturing, due to the large number of details and parts in it, as it requires the use of modern scientific methods in manufacturing. Aref Al-Sayed worked from the beginning to develop this instrument with all its details, and solve its technical problems.

The workshop manufactures three types of Qanoun:

  • Traditional ArabicQanoun
  • Traditional Arabic Qanun for children (20 Maqam), small size
  • Innovative Wooden Qanoun(without leather)

  • Traditional Arabic Qanoun.
It is manufactured using traditional methods in terms of shape and sound, using the best quality wood and raw materials, adding to it the authentic Arabic decorations which is considered an integral part of the instrument’s external beauty. It is also possible to add a 1/8 Turkish tuning pegs to it

·     ÂTraditional Arabic Qanun for children (20 Maqam), small size.
Through the long experience in manufacturing, and due to the difficulty that young students and children are exposed to in learning due to the large size of this instrument compared to their small bodies and hands, Aref Al-Sayed worked to develop the traditional Qanounto suit children and young students, so he came up with his own version of a small, light-sized Qanoun, Beautiful in appearance, and as complete as a traditional instrument. It has become the distinguishing mark that has famed the workshop since its beginnings.

·     ÂInnovative Wooden Qanoun (without leather).
During the work on the Qanoun for more than twenty years in terms of manufacturing and maintenance, there were some problems that hindered musicians, including problems of change and instability of the instrument’s tuning due to the change in humidity degrees, especially in open spaces, in addition to the short lifespan of the skin, which leads to the need of changingthe skin constantly, and thus, when the sound reaches the box through the skin, a large percentage of the sound waves are lost over the skin patch.

With diligent work and continuous experimentation, Aref Al-Sayed produced the fruit of his continuous efforts, which resulted in a complete wooden instrument without skin, producing the same sound with the same quality and accuracy of performance.
